As an
internal communications
professional, Carla Castillo
likes to help company
management understand
employees, and help
employees understand
management. And in today’s
environment, that’s more
important than ever – for
everyone.
"The
technology has really
enabled us to open up the
conversation – across
different levels, titles and
organizations," Carla said.
"You have to be timely and
accurate or people will call
you on it. It’s very
important to be transparent
and open."
Carla,
who joined ROI Communication
in 2010, has spent nearly a
decade working in Silicon
Valley, first at 3Com, then
at Intuit and most recently
at eBay. While at the
auction giant, Carla managed
its intranet, overseeing its
information architecture,
content and maintenance. As
part of these
responsibilities, she
managed a team of writers,
designers and vendors and
worked closely with the
company’s business leaders
and internal communications
team to communicate company
messages, measure their
effectiveness and keep
leaders informed about
employee opinions. At
Intuit, she managed Intuit’s
intranet, called Strategy
News and Performance, or
SNAP, for short.
In
these positions, Carla
developed exceptional skills
in a wide range of technical
tools and programs, both for
online publishing and
measuring communication
effectiveness.
Like
customers, employees have
become a key part of a
company’s ongoing
conversation. "One way or
the other, they’re going to
be talking with friends and
family, and you want them to
represent the company well,"
said Carla, who delivered a
keynote presentation on the
use of social media at
Ragan’s 2008 conference.
"Some leaders think if you
don’t talk about something,
the problem doesn’t exist.
But the conversation is
going on without them,
anyway. It’s better to be a
part of that conversation."
Fluent
in Spanish, Carla is also a
competitive softball player
who plays third base on a
team called the Big
Pluhowksis. She lives in San
Jose, California.
