When Deborah Linggi tackles a new communications
project, she starts by asking a lot of questions and listening
carefully. "Listening is the first step to really understanding
what exactly the client needs and where you can make a
difference. The more questions you ask, the more thoughtful
and effective your work will be," she said. And with nearly 20
years of experience in communications, Deborah has done a lot of
both.
Deborah has a diverse communications background, having
worked in non-profit, corporate and agency environments in
internal, external and executive communication roles. Before
joining the ROI team in 2010, she was the Director of Employee
Communications at The Active Network, a leading provider of
online registration, online communities, and marketing services.
While there, she ran the global internal communications function
and provided strategic counsel to the senior executive team.
Prior to that, she spent a decade in a variety of leadership
roles at Hewlett-Packard, where her work included: promoting the
use of social media to foster two-way communication among
executives and employees, building the company’s reputation
among influential industry analysts, and working on the 2002
integration of Compaq. Earlier, as a manager with the global
public relations firm Burson-Marsteller, she led Sun’s Y2K
communication efforts and developed branding strategies for
technology start-ups. She also counseled technology clients at
the Bay Area public relations firm Cunningham Communication,
spent two years in public relations at Apple, and worked as a
program coordinator with the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
"Having worked in a variety of communication roles – from
public relations to executive communications and employee
communications – I try to take a more integrated approach to
projects," Deborah said. "By approaching things more
holistically, the communication strategy usually ends up making
a much greater impact."
Away from work, Deborah enjoys spending time with her family,
reading historical fiction, attending live theatre and hiking
through the many nature areas in the San Diego area, where she
lives.
