"We’re communicating a
lot, but are we getting
through?" This is a question
that Susan Murdy asks often in
an age of multiplying e-mail
accounts, blogs, social media,
texting, websites and
traditional media. "Ten years
ago, people said that all
this technology would make
our lives simpler. My job is
to help make that more of a
reality."
A communications professional
with more than 20 years of
experience, Susan advises
clients on communications
strategy for internal and
external audiences, change
management, employee engagement
and strengthening communication
to improve business performance.
Working for a range of Fortune
100 companies in diverse
industries, she has managed
large teams and budgets,
conducted communication audits,
developed strategic
communication plans, drafted
message platforms, created
employee intranets, coached
executives and led public
relations initiatives.
"I’ve done both external and
internal communications," Susan
said, "and I find internal to be
much more challenging because
employees are there all day,
every day, and they know their
company’s ins and outs. When you
really connect with a tough
audience like that, it feels
good."
Susan began her career in the
financial industry, working in
public relations in the banking
industry. Later, as a Vice
President for Public Affairs and
Corporate Relations at Visa USA
and Visa International, she led
public relations initiatives to
promote consumer and legislative
priorities, supported the CEO
and served as a media
spokeswoman. After a stint at
Hewlett-Packard as a Director of
Global Communications in its
Consumer and Inkjet Printer
Business, Susan was hired by The
Walt Disney Company as a Vice
President for Communications in
its growing Internet Group.
Subsequently, as a
consultant, Susan helped United
Airlines re-establish its
corporate communications
function during bankruptcy,
before moving on to the
Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company
as its Director of Corporate
Communications. She joined ROI
Communication in 2010.
"It’s nice to keep growing,"
she said. "I always like to be
learning something new." And
teaching others what she’s
learned, too – in addition to
her consulting work,
