Nicki recently completed her first 100-mile ride. Working in HR, she helps others reach their personal and professional goals, too.
Nicki O’Brien believes that it’s important to like your job. And working on ROI’s Human Resources team, she does – from biking to the office in the morning to mapping out career development plans for ROI employees. "Work is such a big part of your daily life, so there should always be an opportunity for learning and professional growth," she said.
Nicki joined the ROI team in 2010 after five years at Specialized Bicycle Components, one of the world’s leading bicycle companies. While there, Nicki managed a team of four and dealt with issues ranging from database management, benefits, training, large events, communication and company culture. She also organized 10 job fairs and recruited more than 90 employees.
In hiring, Nicki emphasizes finding the right cultural fit. "When you’re bringing people in on a team, they have to have not just the right background, but the right passion. That enthusiasm is key, because you’re only as strong as each of your team members are, individually," Nicki said.
Earlier in her career, Nicki – an avid triathlete – worked for the city of Manhattan Beach in its recreation department, managing a staff of 15 lifeguards, serving as head swim coach, and organizing aquatic programs for more than 10,000 customers. A competitive swimmer, she still trains regularly.
Nicki earned a B.A. in Psychology from Dominican University in San Rafael, California, and recently completed her Masters in Counseling, with an emphasis in Career Counseling, from Santa Clara University. As a volunteer, she has worked with Habitat for Humanity and raises money to fight cancer, usually through pledges for her participation in challenging athletic events.
