John Robertson understands
that determining communication effectiveness requires a combination of
quantitative and qualitative analysis. With this in mind, he applies
insights from nearly two decades of corporate work – as well as advanced
training in measuring workplace behavior – to help clients evaluate and
improve their approach to communication.
"When leaders are trying
to communicate, how do we know if their message is reaching the audience or
has the desired impact?" John said. "You can either simply hope it does, or
you can actually measure if it’s making a difference."
While ROI specializes in
quantitative measurement of internal communication at large organizations,
its approach is also holistic. "The right data is a great start, but it’s
important to accurately identify themes, trends and opportunities for
improvement," he said.
At ROI, John helped
develop the ROI ScorecardTM, a tool that enables large
organizations to assess the effectiveness of their internal communications
in relation to industry benchmarks.
John has applied his
communication and quantitative skills in senior internal communication roles
at many large companies. Clients have included Adobe, Applied Biosystems,
Xilinx and Hewlett-Packard. For example, John helped HP CEO Mark Hurd
design and deploy a fast and simple survey process to track employee
engagement during a critical companywide transformation.
John also specializes in
the design, implementation and evaluation of corporate training and
organizational development programs. Before joining ROI, he served as the
first training manager for Network Appliance, where he managed the company’s
leadership development program and created a successful intranet portal for
managers around the globe.
At Quantum, John designed
the company’s first new manager training program, oversaw technology and
employee training and the company’s technical research libraries. During his
tenure, Training magazine named Quantum one of the top ten training
organizations in America.
At both Quantum and
Network Appliance, John led successful efforts to earn recognition for both
companies on Fortune’s "100 Best Companies to Work for in America" list.
John is an active board member of the Public Relations
Society of America, and also serves as president of the Silicon Valley
chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators. He has a
B.A. in Industrial Psychology from the University of Wisconsin, and an M.S.
in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from San Jose State University. |
