Samantha is a big fan of Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass. She brings a fresh perspective to her work, too.
Samantha Train likes everything to add up, and as a key member of ROI Communication’s accounting team, that’s a great asset. “There’s always a solution,” Samantha said. “When something doesn’t add up I like to figure out where the problem is and fix it.”
Samantha, who joined the ROI Communication team in 2010, honed her accounting skills while serving as the office manager for Engineered Design, her family’s landscape design firm. But she traces her discipline and problem-solving abilities to lessons she learned in high school while caring for and competing atop her horse, Sebastian, in English dressage.
Caring for Sebastian taught her responsibility, patience and the importance of being thorough. “As with accounting, you have to be diligent and everything needs to be done a certain way. It can be quite demanding,” she said. On the ROI team, Samantha manages payroll for ROI’s team of 100, and pays the company’s bills – both critical functions in day-to-day operations.
Working at ROI is Samantha’s first foray into the communication business, but she finds the field stimulating. This new focus makes her more aware of how she writes and talks, she said. “I’m learning something new every day.”
When she’s not balancing the books at ROI, Samantha still rides, reads fiction and often takes her two boxers, Cash and Chloe, for long runs along the beach in Santa Cruz. In 2010 she earned an AS in Business from Cabrillo College.
